Wooden Saint Dolls

While at Edel, I met the lovely Lisa from Catholic Missionary Family. She always had a smile and was just beaming every time I saw her.

Soon after Edel, there was a thread that shared all the different blogs that the various attendees authored. I read through so many of them but absolutely fell in love with these little wooden saint dolls that Lisa had on her blog

I got the itch and wanted to create. I couldn't wait, but I did because my back craziness ensued August through to early October. Life calmed down a bit soon after and I found time to grab the necessary items to get started on these lovely little wooden dolls.

Do visit her link here, she has so many great resources that I found so helpful. I also enjoyed scouring the internet for all things wooden saint dolls. It was a fun little journey that turned into a little prayer for me.

Without further ado, here's the cast:
St. Nicholas, St. John the Evangalist, St. Joseph the Worker, Holy Mary, Mother of God

I made the saints above for the boys for St. Nicholas feast day. St. Nicholas was a for sure, Mother Mary was another definite given recent feast days and the whole she-being-the-mama-of-Christ thing, and last were the patron saints of our boys.
I love the Holy Family and love that the boys have these to play and learn with.

I also made a few more saints. We were meeting some friends for dinner on the Feast of St. Nicholas so I thought I'd paint the patron saints of their three daughters.
Holy Mary Mother of God, St. Therese of the Little Flower , St. Gianna Beretta Molla, St. Lucy

Now here are the little saint dolls up close and personal:

St. Joseph the Worker
Holy Mary, Mother of God
St. John the Evangalist
St. Nicholas of Myra

 St. Lucy

St. Gianna Beretta Molla
St. Therese of the Little Flower

Since these, I've painted Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (she's a special one for me) and am almost done with Our Lady of Guadalupe (She's almost done. Life happened but I'm almost done.).

I really loved painting these little dolls. I loved how, while painting them all I could think of was their love for Our Lord, reflecting on the lives that they all led, and how much I wanted to do their little wooden saint dolls justice. The saints and their prayers they have shared me throughout my life are so special and important to me. I lean on their wisdom often and pray that my boys will learn to do the same as they grow.

Have you ever painted wooden saint dolls? or done the wooden saint doll exchanges? I've only painted, never exchanged, but this really is a whole new fun world for me!

  4. They are so great!! I'm inspired to try it myself, but I am afraid I'd do a horrible job. Maybe I'll try, though...I do have some wooden peg people around.

    1. Yay, Gina! Try it! You won't be horrible and I think you'll really enjoy it. Let me know if you end up giving it a go. If not, I'd love to share some patron saint wooden dolls with your kiddos! :)

  5. You are off to a great start. Watch out, it's addictive! Whenever I paint them now, I make three or four of the same one at the same time, just to have extras to give as gifts. It is easier to do them in bulk. And I found having a little fan to be super helpful. The paint dries so much faster and you can really make progress. And I hope you participate in an exchange soon. We did one two years ago on All Saint's Day and I loved seeing the variety and creativity of various people.

  6. I painted a bunch when the kids were smaller and they are pretty beaten up now(or should I say well-loved). These are great - I really love St. Gianna Beretta Molla - that is the first time I have seen her done! I love the idea of the exchange as well!
